Introducing Sean Curd (Australia) (2 replies)

Hello all! My name is Sean Curd and I live in Brisbane, Australia.

I have had a long interest in my family history, which has probably driven my mother mad … sorry Mum :( I have dragged Mum into all sorts of activities trying to gather information on my behalf on our family … again sorry Mum! But I have been lucky as I have an Aunty that has an interested (thanks Aunty Kathy) and a relative through my Great Grandfather’s family (thanks Marg) have been able to give everyone a kick start (at least for the Australian Curds). I’ve also met Rebecca in Devon that has been kind to share what information she has.

Our family (the Curds) came to Australia by way of a crime – well two actually. Poor Richard Curd was deported to Australia in 1831 after being tried a second time at Maidestone, Kent and shipped to Sydney on board the Lord Melville II. We Curds come from the Kent area, specifically around Maidestone.

So far we can go back to John Curd who was born in about 1755, I presume in Yalding, Kent (or close to it). I had heard a rumour on the Net that the Curd name came to the UK with William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Not sure how true it is!

Happy Searching,

Seems to me there is a large chunk of tree which should be connected to ours!

It all revolves around
Louis (Lewis) Curd Born: 1824 - Buckinghamshire, England, UK and Died: 1903 - Epsom, Surrey, England, UK.

Wife
Dinah Lovell
Born: 1823 - Hayes Middx England UK, Died: 1899 - Kensington, Middx, London, England, UK

Looking at the children's names (below), there is so much in common with other branches we have that there has to be a link. A Lewis CURD is listed as being born 1823 in Bendom (according the the Buckinghamshire FHS) but I can find no more apart from a stray census listing in 1881 where Lewis shows up as a patient in "St Mary Hospital" Cambridge Place Paddington London. He is shown as married. Both Lewis and Dinah appear in the 1891 Census.

Can anyone uncover more?

Well now that the great day has come and gone I guess it's time to reflect..

I really enjoyed myself, sorry if I didn't get to spend much time with everyone, I seemed to be very busy for the whole day!

Well now it's time to move this thing into 2nd gear! I hope to introduce some interactive features to the site really soon, these will include:
- On line family tree for registered users
- Gallery features for your photographs
- Ability to correct, add to and comment on the tree
- Include all branches of the CURD tree even if they are not connected yet
- etc etc

Keep your eyes peeled for developments.

Now in BIG letters:
Thank you John for all the local organising that you did to make the day a real success for all of us, it really is/was much appreciated.

CURD FAMILY GET TOGETHER – 10 DAYS TO GO!

Just a quick update:

Opening Times:
The school hall will be open to Curd family members from 10.30 onwards and we are letting in the general public at 14.00 onwards

Photograph
We are hoping to have an “official” group Curd family photograph taken at 12.00 so make sure you are around at that time to be included (although I’m sure there will be lots of “unofficial” ones as well!)

Flaunden Church:
Flaunden church will be open in the afternoon from 2.00 pm until 5.00pm serving teas and cakes
Note: several of John and Susannah’s children were baptized at Flaunden rather than Sarratt but in the old church which was down in the Chess valley – the current church was built in 1838 and still has the original font plus a small display on the history of the original church – definitely worth a visit if you are in the area

Public transport:
Anyone intending to use public transport please note that the 352 bus is now running 15 minutes later than previously published on the web site.
It now leaves Hemel Hempstead bus station at 15 minutes past the “odd” hour ie 9.15, 11.15, 1.15, 3.15, 5.15 and leaves Watford Town Centre at 15 minutes past the “even” hours ie 10.15, 12.15, 2.15. 4.15 calling at both Hemel Hempstead and Watford Metropolitan stations (not Watford Junction) and stopping in Sarratt village
Note: if you are using public transport and would like to visit Flaunden please let me know and we will arrange a lift for you

And now the bad news!
Sarratt church was closed for redecoration at the end of June – we are not sure what the visiting arrangements are going to be on the day – hopefully we will be able to gain access but there may be some restrictions as to what we can see inside

And finally
If there are any descendants of John and Susannah who are intending to come along and who have not yet contacted me I would appreciate it if you could let me know who is coming and let me know your connection to John and Susannah so that I can prepare name badges in advance – this will save a bit of time on the day

Looking forward to meeting all my Curd cousins on the 19th!

Hi

My name is Sue and I am researching my mother-in-laws family. Her maiden name was Curd. I discovered Sue Curd and her DNA project on the web and she told me about the get together and from there discovered this forum. Mums brother has just done the DNA test for Sue and we are awaiting the results. I have been having a lot of trouble with this branch firstly as I haven't been able to locate mums fathers, James Augustus Curd, birth certificate. I have however found a James of the right age in 1901 census born in Poplar whose father is Charles Samuel Curd also born Poplar c1860. I have traced back to his parents, John Curd born c1825 Poplar and Mary Ann Eve born c1825. I think Sue Curd is leaning towards the possiblity that this branch links to her Sussex branch rather than the other branches. Perhaps the DNA test will prove things one way or another.

Just wondered if we could co-ordinate some kind of photographic display? This would be a good opportunity for people to spot their own relatives in others' collections.

Hi
I am the daughter of Albert Edward Curd who came out here to New Zealand in the late 1940s/early fifties....He died a few years ago now and I have acquired a fairly unreliable family tree from my older brother...From what I can make out from it my father had 1 brother, John, also deceased who lived in Croydon also. There were I think 4 sisters Kit, Iris, May and Joy. My grandfather's name was also Bert and he married ?Bella (?Kitchen) and brought her out from South Africa - so the family story goes...
My grandfather Bert had I think 4 sisters and 1 brother Kitty (married Bob Gilam, Sukie (m. A. Potter), Maggie (m. John Carter); Jane (m. Joe Jarman), and a brother William (m. EdithElu...missing end to name). Their parents were George Curd (son of Kazia Roberts and George Curd, and mother Sarah nee Whitmore daughter of Mary Roffey and John Whitmore.
I have an extension of the family tree of William that includes names such as Billy and Marion Clifford, Freddy and Ivy nee Barford, Dennis and Betty nee Lee and Tony and Brenda....
I would be interested in hearing from any relatives living anywhere. I live in the Wairau Valley, New Zealand. My email address is madeleinecurd@hotmail.com

John Hopkins provided the following info:

Best web site, mainly for hotels, is probably www.bedandbreakfasts.co.uk – go to Hertfordshire and then type in the post code for the school which is WD3 6AS. This also gives you a map showing locations.

One of the nicest hotels in the area is the Two Brewers in Chipperfield - good accommodation attached to a historic pub overlooking the village green and cricket pitch – unfortunately they have limited accommodation on Saturday 19th at the moment so you need to get in quick - but they can offer a reduced rates deal if you wanted to book three nights Friday/Saturday/Sunday

For cheaper bed and breakfasts in family homes try www.hertsdirect.org and type in bed and breakfast Kings Langley or Sarratt. I can personally recommend Woodcote House in Chipperfield (leveridge@btinternet.com) but the owners are looking to sell their house at the moment and so you would need to enquire nearer the date to make sure accommodation is still available. If you are an England Rugby fan you might want to check out Mrs Lewsey’s bed and breakfast in Commonwood at dglewsey@hotmail.co.uk Commonwood is a pretty little hamlet between Chipperfield and Sarratt with nice walks to both villages and Addlestone’s cider at the local pub. Also a fairly new bed and breakfast in Sarratt itself, which I don’t think is on any official lists yet, is care of Carole Tillott phone number (0)1923 264246.

Anyone who is staying overnight on the 19th might want to take in the museum in Redbourn (just the other side of Hemel Hempstead) on the way home, particularly if you have connections with Jonas Curd who was a blacksmith in the village in the 1840s – they have a small collection of blacksmith’s tools and Jonas is included in the list of smiths known to have worked in the village – also a small display regarding the local straw plaiting and associated hat making industry which many of the Curd ladies were involved in. It’s only a small museum but worth a visit if you are passing through the area – but only open on Sunday afternoons.

For those of you equipped with the latest technology, the school postcode is WD3 6AS, if, like me, you rely on an old fashioned map, you will find the village school at the south western end of the village green, adjacent to the pond and the Cricketers pub.

For those relying on public transport, there is a regular, but infrequent, bus service connecting Watford with Hemel Hempstead via Sarratt. It stops at Metropolitan Line stations Watford and Croxley Green and British Rail station Hemel Hempstead and runs every two hours leaving Hemel Hempstead on the odd hours (9.00, 11.00 etc) and Watford on the even hours (10.00, 12.00 etc)

Finally a note for any American cousins who are thinking of hiring a car - please note that (as well as having the steering wheel being on the other side!) – the majority of British cars have manual transmissions so if you prefer an automatic don’t forget to specify this in advance.
The international dialling code for the UK is +44, you should then drop the leading zero shown in the numbers above.

I have just had confirmation of a connection with an American side of the tree. Over the 37 markers measured we have a match on 33 markers and just a minor variation on the remaining 4 so things are looking up.

Nice to have the forum up and running again, well done Brian.
I'm John Hopkins, grandson of Minnie Hopkins nee Curd. I live in Chipperfield, Herts and I am part of the John Curd/ Susannah Pymley branch of the Curd family. I am a member of the Sarratt Local History Society and we are hoping to put on a Curd family day in the village of Sarratt (where John and Susannah were married) later in the year - more details will appear in due course.
I would be very pleased to correspond with anyone else who is a member of this part of the clan.
Incidentally my great grandfather James Curd had the unusual distinction of being "killed while picking cherries."

A recent check of my DNA matches has revealed a near 100% match with a person from the CURDS family.

A quick email to him reveals that he is connected with the CURDS family and that he has also been trying to connect with the Hertfordshire CURD family who form a large part of my tree. So far we have no documentary proof of a connection but the DNA shouldn't lie! so we have another entire area to look into.

I had suspected that John CURD b abt 1750 and shown in later documents to have lived in Herts, was an "incomer" and this connection may explain it especially as my new "blood brother" also reports connections with family in Cambridgeshire as well.

My name is Brian CURD and as you've probably guessed, www.curdfamily.com is one of my domains.

I have been trying to build a comprehensive family tree for 2 or 3 years now and have managed quite a lot BUT, there is still a long way to go and a lot of details to fill in.

So far I have traced my ancestors back to John CURD and Susannah PYMLEY, both born about 1750, and living in Sarratt/Redbourn/Flaunden in Hertfordshire UK. Checking various records show very little CURD activity in the area before this date so I am left to assume that they actually came for elsewhere. Help!

I have also had a 37 marker DNA test recently and I hope the results of that will give me some clues as to the most fruitful direction for future research.

While I was brought up and spent most of my adult life in Wiltshire, I am now settled on the Isle of Wight, just of the South coast of the mainland UK.

Sue Curd (Guild of One Name Studies) has set up a DNA project for CURD family members at Familytreedna.com.

For anyone interested in contributing to the CURD family DNA test, here’s the direct link.

With the US dollar at a very favourable conversion rate, there hasn’t been a better time to investigate for quite a while.

I have completed a 25 marker test and am awaiting the results from an upgrade to 37 markers. More news as I get it..
